An armada of plastic bags is riding the ocean waves - and sea creatures are truly suffering. Data released by the US Environmental Protection Agency shows that somewhere between 500 billion and a trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year. Less than 1% of plastic bags are recycled - as it costs more to recycle a plastic bag than to produce a new one.

Environmental Awareness: Trashing the Oceans?
Jen with Dr. Sylvia Earle at the 2009
I usually don't like to promote long internet clips - but this one is truly worthy. For those of you who don't know Sylvia Earle, she is a legend and one of the most amazing people ever to work with the ocean. Among many things, she has been the chief scientist for NOAA, a National Geographic Explorer in Residence, as well as Time Magazine's first "Hero for the Planet" in 1998.
Here is a link to her 18 minute speech (with images) as she asked for her "wish" at the 2009 TED Awards. Her message is so real and so simple. Watch it when you have some time
