In response to the increasing threats to and loss of coral reefs and other coastal ecosystems, the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) declared 1997 to be International Year of the Reef. IYOR 1997 was a global effort involving 225 organizations in 50 countries and territories with the goal of increasing awareness and understanding about coral reefs and of supporting related conservation, research and management efforts. The continued deterioration of many marine environments led to a revival and revitalization of the first IYOR campaign.  The ICRI has designated 2008 as the International Year of the Reef (IYOR 2008).  More information is available on the IYOR website - HERE http://www.iyor.org/shapeimage_8_link_0
